Fitness and the Evolution of Sea Pines Country Club
Thursday, April 25, 2024
In a time where a growing number of Americans desire to live longer, healthier, and more active lifestyles, country club amenities inclusive of fitness, wellness, and recreation are playing a more dynamic role in the pursuit of membership, where golf was once the dominant driving force. Country clubs nationwide have acknowledged that their future success weighs heavily on offering amenities and programming that fully encompass the changing needs of prospective members - and Sea Pines Country Club is no exception.

The Club serves a growing, diverse membership of over 860 which is comprised of golfers, tennis players, fitness and pool goers, and foodies. As the average age of joining members continues to decrease, the need for more relevant programming and amenity offerings has become increasingly apparent. In October of 2017, Phase 1 renovations, inclusive of a complete overhaul of the Blue Heron Pub and Grille, addition of the screened in Palmer Patio, indoor and outdoor pool renovation, and the addition of a children’s splash pool, were unveiled and wildly accepted by the membership. These renovations have allowed the Club to accommodate a larger number of members, with Friday Night Happy Hours exceeding 250.

“Seeing the beauty of Phase 1 and the life it breathed back into the Club, it became blatantly obvious that the Fitness Center and Locker Rooms would need similar attention if we were to retain our first class status,” says David Ellis, Board of Directors President. And so it began. After months of planning with architects, reviewing bids, and analyzing financials, the SPCC Board of Directors was excited to announce that Phase 2 renovations of Sea Pines Country Club would no longer be a dream but would become a reality – as soon as early October of 2018.

The project, estimated to be completed by Spring of 2019, will result in an expansion of the current fitness facility (approximately 2,500 sq. ft.) to 7,300 sq. ft. The total expansion will include an enlarged fitness floor, locker rooms that are double in size (with infrared saunas), a second-floor group fitness room, and the new Café which promises to serve up health conscious menu items for the fitness buffs and Summer fare for the pool goers.

The additional square footage will provide a number of open areas which will be designated for free weights, stretching, and functional training while also allowing for the addition of a rowing machine, strength equipment and a workout system similar to the Life Fitness Synergy 360. All new cardio machines will be placed strategically throughout the expanded fitness floor in order to provide more space.

The second floor group fitness room will allow for class equipment to be better stored, creating a Zen space that is free of clutter and provides the perfect setting for any one of the 26 land and water classes offered each week as well as workshops that focus on wellness. Members enjoy land classes ranging from Gentle Yoga and Myofascial Release to High Intensity Interval Training and TRX and 3-4 variations of water classes including Aqua Tabata. Classes are taught by highly trained and certified instructors, three of which are full time personal trainers who are available to help members meet their fitness goals.

Brand new locker rooms with infrared saunas will complete the perfect workout. Infrared saunas are becoming widely recognized for their multiple health benefits which include weight loss, whole body detoxification, pain relief, stress relief and so much more.

The evolution of the private club industry and embracing fitness trends is far beyond the gym. “As fitness becomes more of a way of life, rather than just about working out, people want to know more about nutrition and healthier lifestyle choices,” says Director of Fitness & Wellness, Wendy Kelly. Come see us in Spring of 2019!
