WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? The rigorous Health Report is based on a comprehensive evaluation of seven club categories: strategy, membership, fitness, food and beverage, golf, tennis and human resources. SPCC scored over 90 percent in strategy, fitness, food and beverage, golf and tennis.

“Keeping our members healthy, happy and fit is a priority and an integral part of our lifestyle design approach,” said Robbie Ames, general manager and chief operating officer of Sea Pines Country Club. “Being recognized as an industry leader reinforces our commitment to playing an active role in the long-term health and well-being of our members.” Ames is also a founding member of The Wellness Project that examines health and wellness as a driver of growth and stability at private clubs.

Ames, the brother of PGA Tour winner Stephen Ames, developed a deep understanding of how fitness impacts everyday life while caddying for his brother for three and a half years. This has been a continual theme at the club under his management, a theme which has been roundly accepted by its entire staff and which greatly benefits its members. What is notable, moreover, is not that SPCC espouses these tenants, but the likes of Club and Resort Business identified the quality of these efforts as it highlighted the “welcome back” recreational initiatives that are a regular part of SPCC’s calendar year.

As one may have observed, shifting demographics and new member priorities have necessitated premier private clubs expand member offerings to promote an active, vibrant and healthy lifestyle globally. Acknowledging industry best practices, SPCC considers health and wellness a club cornerstone, a natural effort under Ames. This includes the upcoming expansion and renovation of the fitness center and upgraded member dining options to provide a variety of fresh and healthy menu items. The club also incorporates fresh vegetables from the on-site vegetable garden that was planted this fall.

“Sea Pines Country Club has embraced the national trends that show health and wellness as a driver of member growth, retention and experience,” says Rick Ladendorf, Founder and President of America’s Healthiest Clubs. “Its programs will enable members to live healthier lives and fully enjoy the club’s amenities.”

In gaining national notoriety, the Club is also honored to announce their recent recognition by BoardRoom magazine as a Distinguished Club of America.

And what does this mean, you may ask again? Most notably, only 179 of the 3,400 private clubs within the entire United States have received this prestigious award, placing Sea Pines Country Club in the top 5% of all private clubs which include the likes of:
• Medinah Country Club
• Oakmont Country Club
• The Olympic Club
• The Riviera Country Club
• Winged Foot Golf Club
• Lake Nona Golf and Country Club

For fine private clubs that operate at the highest standards, BoardRoom magazine’s entirely merit-based Distinguished Clubs award program uses a club-specific rating system that recognizes the club, its management, and its staff based on a proprietary criteria and evaluation process; what is said plainly is its goal is to distills and measure a club’s Member Experience. As such, the rating system used by Distinguished Clubs is different from any that has come before, and with it, the private club industry now has a meritorious means to identify the top private clubs based on the most important aspect: Member Experience.

While member experience may vary from Greenwich to Fort Myer, BoardRoom has made an effort to evaluate the true experience of each individual who calls a club home. When one digs deeper, its often the case that such awards are based on advertising spends or other less-meritrelated drivers. BoardRoom confirmed its methodology is committee nomination, a site visit, and formulaic audit including most notably site-visit data.

As defined by Distinguished Clubs, “Member Experience” is that special combination of “Qualities” that a private club provides its members. It is not just the quality of service, facilities, or product provided, it is also the quality of the staff and of the management, as well as the overall club governance they deliver. The most important quality, however, is the quality of the intangible. While difficult to measure, the latter is comprised of those magic moments experienced, the members befriended, the memorable events and famous tournaments attended, as well as the club traditions, history, and heritage proudly recognized.”

It may make the research scientist in you cringe, but that’s the truth. When it comes to club membership and experience, it’s the intangible feeling that allows you to either feel like you are home, or not. Remember Cheers, when Norm walked into the room, do you feel like that? While everyone may not shout your name, they know your name, and not just the staff, but your friends from tennis, golf, and trivia night.

Whether it’s an improved dining experience, upgraded exercise facility, or improvements to the tennis offerings, Sea Pines Country Club is not standing idly by waiting until they are forced to make improvements. Whether largescale projects or the subtle adjustments connected to Ames, the tennis pro and golf pros, chef, and others, everyone should be proud of Sea Pines Country Club’s accomplishments in bringing more honor and attention to the name.
